After a guest lecture of Jelte Glas I really get inspired by the idea of tiny houses. I did some research and have 3 examples of this inspiring movement.

3 Similar Signals

First I want to start with the example I saw at the guest lecture. Jelte Glas is the ”CEO” of Woonpioniers which is related to the tiny-house movement. This movement was already happening in the US but now it coming to Europe. He started with the desire to build our own house but we wanted it without a towering mortgage. They want to create a stimulating micro-society that involves the environment in a positive way in her presence.

The second exampe is from Texelyurts. The Yurt (which simply ‘home’ means in Turkish language family) comes from Central Asia. It is a circlar wooden structure consising of numerous wooden sticks that are held together in a genial manner and thus form a circular room with a domd roof. It is the traditional home of nomadic peoples from Central Asian because it can be moved easily as a house. These might be one of the fastest to build and most versatile dwellings of the tiny house movement (I doubt if it is easy to build  😉

This still looks a little primitive but below I have a ” modern ” version found namely The Lotus Belle tent home. This is a high-quality and affordable tent, and it actually looks very luxurious.

The last signal is a three house. Pete Nelson is designing these thee houses and is also ‘famous’ from the TV show Tree House Masters. This signal has been around for a while but I still find it very interesting. You see this often in other countries but not really in the Netherlands. There are more people than homes so it seemed like a good idea to pack my stuff and live in a tree;). I really want to try a home of Pete Nelson because  I attach value to adventure, sustainability, experimenting and fun.

Why is it interesting?

I think these movements are a result of the descent in the house market and the economic crisis. It’s  hard to pay the amount of money which is asked monthly for most of the people. There is less cash in circulation due to thes happenings. Therefore it is necessary to live in a smaller house.

Trends:
I think besides money  megatrends such as individualization and sustainability have a big role in all of this. There is a certain need for freedom for the individual. They are aware of what is happening to the world and want to live their own sustainable life because they care about the environment.

Conclusion:
You pay less for smaller houses and in most ways it is better for the environment. The first 2 houses are great if you like to travel and don’t want to stay at one place for the rest of your lives. I think we becoming more like a nomad and I like the thought!
